  • Brick
  • Masonry
  • Basement Walls
  • Foundation and Retaining Walls

Recommended with Acryl® 60 for:

  • Improving adhesion, bonding, and curing.
  • Making the job smoother, easier, and more durable.
Coverage

As a base coat, Thorseal will cover 2 lbs. per sq. yd.  Coverage figures are approximate.  Sufficient material must be applied to completely fill and seal all holes, pores and voids.  NOTE:  Splitface, fluted and other textured masonry units will require more material per sq. yd.

1 Gallon = 10 lbs
5 Gallon = 60 lbs

Surface Preparation

Surface must be clean and structurally sound.  Chip, sandblast or grind off paint, dirt, grease, oil, efflorescence, all defective materials and foreign matter, etc.  If previously painted, expose 70% of the original surface.  Repair cracks, holes, etc. with Waterplug.  Block basements:  tap weep holes at base to relieve excess water pressure in walls.  Leave open 24 hours after application of Thorsoseal, then seal w/ Waterplug.

Application

Dampen masonry or concrete surface before applying Thoroseal.  Apply Thoroseal with tampico fiber or special Thoroseal brush.  Do not apply as a thin paint coat.  Lay it on the wall and level it out.  If wall becomes dry or mix starts to pull during application, dampen wall again.  Do not thin the material.

FOR MAXIMUM WATERPROOFING:  Evenly distribute base coat of Thoroseal, minimum 2 lbs. per sq. yd (1kg/m2).

FOR ORDINARY WATER CONDITIONS AND A WASHABLE ACRYLIC PAINT FINISH:  Brush on one coat of Thoroseal, minimum 2 lbs. per sq. yd (1 kg/m2).  Let cure 24 hours or longer.  Apply finish coat of Thorosheen.

FOR ORDINARY WATER CONDITIONS AND A CEMENTITIOUS FINISH:  Brush on base coat of Thoroseal, minimum 2 lbs. per sq. yd. (1kg/m2).  Apply finish coat of Super Quickseal, minimum ½ lb per sq. yd. (1/4kg/m2).

FOR SEVERE WATER CONDITIONS AND A SMOOTH PLASTER COAT FINISH:  Brush on base coat of Thoroseal, minimum 2 lbs per sq. yd. (1kg/m2).  Apply trowel coat of Thoroseal, minimum 12 lbs. per sq. yd. (6kg/m2) or sufficient material to bring surface true and level.  For trowel application, add 25 lbs (11kg) clean white silica sand to each 50 lb. (22.7kg) drum.  Use Acryl 60.

FOR FINISHING CONCRETE:  Add 1 part Acryl 60 to 3 parts clean water and mix with Thoroseal.  Mix and apply first coat at 2 lbs per sq. yd. (1kg/m2).  Apply second brush coat at same rate after first coat has set.  When finish coat has set, float it to uniform texture with a sponge float.

FOR BACK PLASTERING:  Prior to placement of back-up units, apply one heavy coat of Thoroseal, minimum 3 lbs. per sq. yd. (1.5kg/m2) to completely fill and seal mortar joints, pores and voids in interior surface of the exterior wall.

FOR FIRMEST BONDING QUALITIES:  Add Acryl 60 to the mixing water.  Proportions can vary depending on bonding requirements.  Normal proportions are 1 part Acryl 60 to 3 parts clean water (approximately 2 qts. [1.9 L] of Acryl 60 per 50 lbs.  [22.7 kg]).  For questionable applications, a test patch is recommended.  Acryl 60 greatly improves mechanical properties and adhesion to smooth or dense concrete.

Limitations

Do not apply on frost covered masonry or frozen walls, or when temperature falls below 40 F (4.4 C), or is expected to within 24 hours.  Do not dampen walls excessively in fall, winter or spring months for outside applications.  If application is made during exceptionally hot or windy weather, finished surfaces should be fog sprayed several times during the day to prevent too rapid drying.
